The Greenland Flag
The Greenlandic flag, also known as Erfalasorput (Our Flag), consists of two horizontal blocks in white and red, intersected by a disk offset in the opposite colors. The flag was designed by former member of the local government, Thue Christiansen, and was first raised on June 21, 1985 (Greenland's National Day).
The creator himself explains that the white color symbolizes the inland ice, and the red part of the disk symbolizes the Greenlandic fjords. The red block at the bottom represents the sea, and the white part of the disk represents icebergs and pack ice. At the same time, the red and white parts of the disk also symbolize the rising and setting sun, which stands for the return of light and warmth at midsummer. Additionally, the colors are the same as those in the Danish Dannebrog, representing the connection to Denmark as well.
